Fall 2010 Contest Season will be here soon! Start planning to compete now! And save these dates!
Every 6 months Toastmasters conducts two speech contests to give our members a chance to experience competitive public speaking and to learn from the many great speakers in our club and the other clubs around us. We encourage brand new members and experienced members alike to participate in these contests. Competing in Toastmasters speech contests is not about winning or losing. It is about growing as a speaker.
This time, the two contests will be the Table Topics and the Humorous Speech Contest. All paid members of our club may compete in either or both contests. Please listen to the announcements at our club meetings and/or check back here to find out the date of our club's speech contest. I would guess that our club speech contest will be in late August or early September.
Table Topics Contest Similar to what we do at every meeting but for the contest, all contestants will be answering the same question. At the beginning of the contest, all contestants (except the first contestant) will be escorted out of the room. The first contestant will come up to the front of the room, hear the question, answer it, and sit down again. The second contestant will then be brought back into the room, and the same thing will happen. The contest is conducted this way so that no contestant will have more or less time that the others to come up with an answer. The questions used in contests will be similar to what you have heard at regular club meetings. There will be no trick questions or questions that require detailed knowledge of a certain topic. The question will ask you to talk about your opinion or come to your own conclusion. Contestants' responses must be between 1 and 2 minutes long. Anyone who speaks less than 1 minute or more than 2 minutes 30 seconds will be disqualified. This is the one contest where there is no grace period on the low end. Contestants must speak for at least 1 minute. The contest judges will choose a winner based on the following criteria.
- Speech Development 30% of your score
- Effectiveness 25% of your score
- Physical 15% of your score
- Voice 15% of your score
- Language 15% of your score
Humorous Speech Contest This contest is conducted every year during the Fall season to show us the value of humor in speaking and also to give us all a good laugh! Humorous speeches should have a narrative flow. They should not be a series of "one liners" like a late night comedian. Beware of off color humor or humor that puts down any group of people. These speeches may do well at our club where we know you well but once you advance on to the next levels the judges will not know you well and could easily be offended by your humor. Humorous speeches must be from 5-7 minutes long. Any contestant speaking less than 4 minutes 30 seconds or more than 5 mintues 30 seconds will be disqualified. Speeches you give during a contest can count as one of the speeches you need for your Competent Communicator or Advanced Communicator award. The contest judges will choose a winner based on the following criteria.
- Speech Development 15% of your score
- Effectiveness 10% of your score
- Speech Value 15% of your score
- Audience Response 15% of your score
- Physical 10% of your score
- Voice 10% of your score
- Manner 10% of your score
- Appropriateness of Language 10% of your score
- Correctness of Language 5% of your score
